Rainbow Watermelon Intricate Tiny Overall Komon Print, Vintage Kimono Silk from Japan, 14" x 45" #1217
An array of reds and pinks, plus greens and blues, with many creamy white dot-like shapes that change and morph like a blending, moving patchwork. Overall we keep seeing watermelon colors. The complexity and intricacy of the print is so beautiful and mysterious; this is a traditional dyeing technique for kimono silk called Komon in Japan. The teeny off-white shapes are so detailed., and makes the bright reds and pinks seem almost blurry until you get closer and see how sharp they actually are. This silk is thin, light, supple, flowy and soft, with medium drape, no shine and no body. The weave is fairly flat; not textured, and there are no areas that seem gray or dark; that's the camera confused by so many different patterns and colors blending. These are pieces from a former kimono, now taken apart so that you can give them new life. Excellent condition 100% Silk. Japan.
