White and Pastels Ikat Masterpiece, Natural Islands, Vintage Oshima Silk Tsumugi from Japan, 13.5" x 63" # ZP-29
This thin, light and supple Oshima silk from a 1980's kimono is another weaving wonder; the intricate details seem impossible. Oshima silk ikats are known for their quality and for highly skilled Oshima artisans who have created them since the 1300's. The kimono made from Oshima Tsumugi silk become beloved heirlooms because they are so beautiful, long-lasting and so comfortable to wear in all types of weather, year after year. Lightweight and thin, very smooth, each thread is pre-dyed to create the intricate ikat design once woven. It takes months to dye and weave one bolt; there are so many processes to assure its beauty. The background is creamy off-white, and the scenery is all natural, forests, maple leaves, clouds; usually this type also has homes and village scenes but this one does not. Both sides are the just the same. These are pieces from a vintage kimono that was taken apart and cleaned. It's thin and light, smooth and soft, almost shiny but not quite. It has a bit of body and not much drape. Each piece weighs about 2 ounces. Though used, it's in excellent condition. Sold per 13.5" x 63" piece. 100% Silk Pongee, Oshima Tsumugi, Amani Islands, Japan. Hand dyed with local plant, mud, and/or indigo dyes, and hand woven. A treasure.
