Vintage Meisen Kimono Silk Pieces, Stunning Dark Blue Botanical Ikat, 14" x 62" from Japan # ZP-15
Deep navy/indigo color, with light grays, white and orange. This silk has Meisen's traditional, intentional blurry edges, fantasy leaves and vines, big white puff-balls (?), swirls and arabesques. Both sides are just the same, and it's a true ikat, woven with thin, fine silk. Intentional short fringe looks black to us but may be dark blue, on portions of the selvedges near the leaves and puffballs, a window into the weaving. These pieces are from a newly cleaned and dis-assembled kimono. It's in excellent, beautiful condition; we see no stains, fading or other problems. The silk is very light and supple, extremely soft with a slight sheen and subtle crispness. Some Meisen silks are heavier and more cottony in feel, but this one is much silkier, quite fine and light. (Each piece weighs less than 2 ounces). The blue saturation even and consistent, and if some areas look darker or lighter in the photos that's just the camera, lighting and sheen. An artisan created vintage treasure, probably 1930's-50's. Sold per 14" x 62" Piece. Last photo shows a whole piece. 100% Silk. Japan. Exceptional. Lyrical. And, vintage Meisen!
