This thin, light and supple Oshima silk from the 1960's is a weaving wonder; the intricate details seem impossible. Oshima silk ikats are known for their quality and for highly skilled Oshima artisans who have created them since the 1300's.  The kimono made from Oshima Tsumugi silk become beloved heirlooms because they are so beautiful, long-lasting and so comfortable to wear in all types of weather, year after year. Lightweight and thin, very smooth, each thread is pre-dyed to create the intricate ikat design once woven. It takes months to dye and weave one bolt; there are so many processes to assure its beauty.  Both sides are the just the same. These are pieces from a 1960's kimono that was taken apart and cleaned. It has lost the starch, shine and crispness that many Oshima silks have; it's supple, soft and flowy. So light, each piece weighs less than 2 ounces. Though used, it's in excellent condition.
