Off-White/Gray Ikat, "Sampler" Faux Patchwork Vintage Silk Tsumugi Pongee from Japan By the Yard #253
Perhaps the weaver was inspired by a sashiko sampler. This thin, light, amazing soft and supple vintage kimono silk is most likely from the Island of Oshima, Japan, famous for this type of silk, but there are no labels. The intricate details in the weave seem impossible. The kimono made from silks like this become beloved heirlooms in Japan because they are so beautiful, long-lasting and so comfortable to wear in all types of weather, year after year. Lightweight and thin, very smooth, each thread is pre-dyed to create the intricate ikat design once woven. It takes years to learn the technique, and months to dye and weave one bolt; there are so many processes necessary to assure its beauty. The background is creamy off-white, and the ikat colors are gray, black, blue-gray and green, all woven from very fine silk. A true ikat, both sides are the just the same and very soft and smooth. It has a bit of body, no shine and not much drape. This is vintage fabric, decades old, and there is some yellowing as you can see. 14" wide and sold by the full yard; we'll cut yours in one continuous piece from the bolt. 100% Silk from Japan.
