Hemp/Ramie Stiff Papery Indigo/Black Textured Crinkled Asa Jofu from Japan, by the Yard, #331
Black weft and blue warp, creating a look of dark midnight blue. Small crinkles from the twisted threads; perhaps technically a crepe weave. It's thin, with a hard not fluffy surface, and lightweight; less than 2 ounces per 14" wide yard. VERY stiff, papery and bouncy. (Far from silk!) Both sides are just the same. It's slightly see-through; the weave has a bit of openness. We machine washed and dried a piece and it shrunk, crinkled more and closed up from 14" to 13" in width, and even more in the length. It got a bit softer but is still crisp. Probably a ramie/hemp blend, designed for summer kimono, definitely Japan. Age unknown. Google Translate indicates the label reads Asa Jofu. 14" wide. Sold by the full yard and we'll cut yours in one piece from the never used, excellent condition bolt.
