True Tsumugi with Weaving Flaw, Off-White Geometric Squares Ikat Vintage Kimono Silk from Japan By the Yard, #409
Alternating orange-red and raisin, tiny sashiko-like 'stitches', all in the ikat weave not printed, creating squares and triangles, geometrically arranged through the bolt. The background is a warm white, not quite as warm or dark as ivory in our opinion. A true ikat, both sides are just the same. It's soft, thin and light. It's raw silk and feels like it, with a matte finish, no shine and a bit of soft slubby texture from the different thicknesses of silk threads. The weaving flaw is shown in the last photo with the chopstick: a few darker red squares on one edge, which there is a good chance your piece will have; sometimes it appears in every yard but comes and goes. There are also some faint age-related spots, so light the camera barely captures them. The closer you get the more you appreciate the difficulty and precision of the weave! Certified authentic Tsumugi 14" wide, sold by the full yard - we'll cut yours in one piece from the never used, vintage bolt. 100% Silk. Japan.
