Peony Sky, Turquoise/Black Crossweave Vintage Meisen Kimono Silk Piece, 13.5" x 54" from Japan # ZP-42
Large peonies with petals and leaves of light gray (not white) and hints of pale purple, with dark red centers. The background is aqua sky-blue turquoise. The weft and selvedges are black, adding more depth, and it has Meisen's traditional, desirable blur. Both sides are the same, and it's a true ikat, feather light, thin, rustic silk woven from various thicknesses of threads, so there are lots of slubs. This silk is a little crisp, not completely opaque, so light each piece weighs just an ounce. It has a bit of sheen, and is the type of Meisen we see as more silk-forward, less cottony. An artisan created vintage treasure, this silk is from a 1930's-50's kimono, so there may be fold lines from the previous seams, and/or clips in the selvedges - it's rustic and vibrant, and does look as old as it is, to us in a good way. 28" repeat. Sold per 13.5" x 54" piece. 100% Silk. Japan. Exceptional, if you don't need perfect.
